The Core French program aims to foster an appreciation for language learning, deepen students’ understanding of their first language and cultural identity, and broaden their perspectives through engagement with French as a second/additional language. This workshop will focus on how French can be introduced and developed in engaging, meaningful, and age-appropriate ways at the secondary level. Together, we will explore instructional approaches that promote student motivation, authenticity, and sustained engagement, while supporting the development of communicative competence. Participants will leave with practical strategies, adaptable classroom activities, and ready-to-use resources designed to strengthen Core French programming and nurture students’ long-term relationship with language learning. During May’s second session, we will work with Core French 5–12 teachers to collaboratively build a coherent program that aims to achieve the abovementioned goals. By connecting and deepening our understanding of what elementary and secondary teachers are doing to promote and develop students’ language skills, participants will identify areas of alignment, continuity, and growth across grade levels. This shared work will support intentional planning, strengthen transitions, and help ensure a more consistent and meaningful Core French learning experience for students from Grades 5 to 12.
