Reading fluency refers to the ability to read a text accurately, quickly, and with appropriate expression. It involves not only recognizing words but also understanding them in context. Fluency is crucial because it serves as a bridge between decoding words and comprehending text.

What is Fluency

Fluency enhances comprehension by allowing readers to focus on understanding the meaning of the text rather than struggling with individual words. When reading fluently, readers can recognize words automatically, freeing up cognitive resources for higher-level comprehension processes such as inference and analysis.

Fluency facilitates engagement with reading. When individuals can read smoothly and expressively, they are more likely to enjoy the reading experience, leading to increased motivation and persistence.

Fluency is closely linked to academic success. Proficient readers who can read fluently tend to perform better in various subjects across the curriculum, as reading is a fundamental skill necessary for learning in all areas.
